F-105 "Thud" Footage Recovered

Twenty cans of rare F-105 "Thud" gun camera footage has been donated to the National Combat History Archive by a Coos Bay family. The footage, believed to be mostly gun camera footage taken over Vietnam in 1967-68 represents a welcome addition the the NCHA's already robust collection of gun camera footage. "What we have seen so far is spectacular" said Gary Mortensen, President of the National Combat History Archive. "We hope to get this rare footage digitized as soon as possible"

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, was a single-seat supersonic fighter-bomber used by the United States Air Force. The Mach 2 capable F-105 bore the brunt of strike bombing over North Vietnam during the early years of the Vietnam War. A two-seat Wild Weasel version was later used in the specialized SEAD role of suppressing surface-to-air missile sites. It was commonly known as the "Thud" by its crews.
